Technical translations are no easy task. Think user manuals, instruction handbooks and safety procedures—those detailed texts that walk us through gadgets, machinery and more.

What makes them so tricky? Technical translations require a totally different approach than marketing texts, for example. They are less about creative writing and more about precision, requiring translators to grapple with industry-specific jargon and delve into the depths of online research.

Technical translators must have access to the best digital dictionaries and most reliable sources and have intricate knowledge of how to use online research tools.

While direct familiarity with the subject matter is definitely a plus, the translator of an AGV maintenance manual won’t necessarily be an automation engineer. So, a good translation will strongly depend on their ability to research with pinpoint accuracy. And the more experience a translator has, the better they can achieve the precision these texts require.

And why is accuracy so important? Because mistakes in technical translations are a really big deal. They can mislead the reader and come with huge liabilities. That’s why they’re best left in the hands of experts (like me!).

Marketing translations are crucial for showcasing a company’s products and services in a globalised market. In the current digital age, where first impressions heavily rely on the quality of a company’s publications, excellent English translations are a must.

But marketing texts aren’t limited to websites—company presentations, product catalogues, press releases and trade fair promotional materials all fall under this category. Sales contracts, agreements, terms and conditions, sustainability reports and ethical guidelines are all examples of business translations. A category I like to call the “serious stuff”.

These documents, intended for both internal and external audiences and stakeholders, contain crucial insights into the company’s workings.

Often, they will also be laden with references to national, European or global standards, which are not always open to free translation: official translations and terminology are gospel here and must be respected. An amateur translator might not be aware or simply lack the tools to search and find the materials they need, producing a substandard translation that paints the company in a poor light.

Moreover, these translations typically have very tight deadlines that only a seasoned expert, well-versed in the content, is able to meet. Professional translators (like myself) will know exactly where to go, what to click, what to use (and what not to use) without wasting time assessing the reliability of their sources.

Another important aspect of these translations is tone: it can’t be too colloquial, given the official nature of the documents, but also shouldn’t neglect the marketing potential of a well-written sustainability report or a clear and concise code of ethics, for example. Only a native English speaker and professional, experienced translator (like me) will be able to find the perfect balance.

NAATI certification is a professional accreditation granted by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) in Australia. The NAATI stamp is a mark of quality and reliability, ensuring translators and interpreters meet high standards of accuracy, ethics and proficiency in their work. It is also mandatory when translating official documents – driver’s licences, birth certificates, police clearances, proof of address – for submission to Australian authorities.

Becoming certified involves a rigorous testing process, and staying so requires ongoing professional development, ensuring the continued high level of the practitioner’s knowledge and skills.

NAATI translations are charged per document for vital records, or per word for longer, non-standard texts requiring a custom approach. Payment is upfront with a turnaround time of 3–5 days for standard documents, and in most cases, the translations can be managed entirely online with a digitally applied NAATI stamp.
